works on paper
After the darkroom I loved the prolonged touch with the paper and the free reign I could give my imagination

In 1982, I made a camping trip to central Australia and purposefully left my camera behind so I would not be tempted to visually ‘frame’ what I saw as a potential photo. These works, made on my return, were pivotal in my change back from photography to drawing and painting, the media I was initially trained in.
I made only quick drawings from the car as it moved. Even when camping I would just walk or cook or read a book, absorbing rather than analysing. When I got home I got some charcoal and just started in the top left hand corner with no idea what I would do.
